ROCHESTER, NY—The Joseph Avenue Arts and Culture Alliance has received a $400,000 award toward the preservation of the historic landmark former synagogue at 692 Joseph Avenue and its transformation into a state-of-the-art Center for Performing and Visual Arts. The project is funded in part by the Save America’s Treasures grant program through the Historic Preservation Fund, as administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior.
On March 14th, 2022, standing before a crowd of community members, local leaders, and state and federal representatives, Senator Chuck Schumer unveiled the unprecedented and transformative investment in our community and its people—commemorating the moment on the steps of our historic building. “We're going to breathe new life into this crumbling landmark and turn it into a performing and visual arts center that will serve families and children throughout the Rochester area for free. And when a neighborhood transitions, it doesn't mean you forget about it. You make it better," proclaimed the Senator.
Today's announcement, just over one year later, comes as the Joseph Avenue Arts and Culture Alliance prepares to break ground on the first phase of the $4.3 million project for which it has raised $3.1 million in committed funding. "The Center for Performing and Visual Arts has been the centerpiece of a shared vision for our community for some time," said Neil R. Scheier, M.D., Board President of the Joseph Avenue Arts and Culture Alliance. "The announcement of this award by the Senator last year made the dream so much closer to the reality we've envisioned. Now that these funds are being made available to us, we can finally start making that dream come to life over the next year."
Since 2014, the Joseph Avenue Arts and Culture Alliance has been leading area revitalization and community transformation in Rochester and its Northeast Quadrant through the performing and visual arts. The Joseph Avenue Arts and Culture Alliance is committed to bringing world-class music, dance, theater, and visual arts performances and educational opportunities to families and children in a safe, inspiring atmosphere, free for all to attend. The centerpiece of their efforts: transforming a landmark synagogue on Joseph Avenue into an 11,000-square-foot performance and gallery space. To learn more, visit JosephAveArts.org.
