At the start of the Memories of Joseph Avenue and the Northeast Quadrant series, we shared on social media the photo of shops at Joseph Avenue and Vienna Street. Quickly, memories poured in and are shared as captions of the photo (above) and a snapshot in time.

“Absolutely love seeing this photo of my family’s store, Orgel’s. My father, Jack Passer, used to bring home sample toys for us to use. If they lasted and we continued to play with them, he would stock them. Later, the store focused on Israeli wares and religious items.” — Susan M.

“My paternal grandmother would often take us to Orgel’s when we’d visit her. She would buy us toys there and we would chat with your grandmother. As a teen and very young adult, I would visit your grandmother in her Monroe Avenue store where I would often shop for gifts for my parents. And Susan, I remember you well, too!” — Marilyn S.

“My family had several businesses on or off of Joseph Ave. We were the electricians and plumbers serving the area. I also attended School #9 and #22 and the Baden Street Settlement as well as several Jewish Schools and synagogues.” — Sheila W.

“I loved Orgel’s penny candy and George’s drug store as well the sisters great childhood.” — Beverly M.

“My favorite thing at Orgel’s was penny candy!” — Sheila W.

“My father had a barber shop on Joseph Ave., from 1950 to the 60s. The first shop was on 339 and the second one was on 508.” — Karen A.-G.
